Antimicrobials from Actinomycetes: Back to the Future
نویسنده
چکیده
T he two-faced Roman god Janus could see both forward and backward simultaneously. In describing the “Janus Effect” as it relates to the effectiveness of corporate chief executive officers (CEOs), California business gurus James Kouzes and Barry Posner suggest that CEOs who reflect furthest back are those who also plan ahead most effectively. In terms of antibiotic discovery, we would do well to reflect on the past as a way of enhancing our forward thinking. Lately the prospects for progress are poor, particularly after several large pharmaceutical companies recently abandoned their natural products and infectious disease discovery programs. Moreover, we are failing to identify new antibiotics despite having powerful experimental tools such as genomics, combinatorial chemistry, and high-throughput in vitro screening at our disposal.

Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Isolates from a Tertiary Care Setting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobials. Like Pseudomonas spp., this bacterium has a remarkable ability to cause infections, particularly in the respiratory and urinary tracts. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of S. maltophilia isolates collected from a tertiary care setting and frequency of multi, extensively...
متن کاملIsolation of L-Glutaminase Producing Marine Actinomycetes
L Glutaminase, a therapeutic enzyme obtained from marine Actinomycetes gains importance because of their adaptability to varied environmental factors. An experimental study was carried out to isolate the L glutaminase producing actinomycetes from the marine sediment of Thoothukudi. Marine sediment sample was collected from six different locations of the Thoothukudi coastal ecosystem, enriched w...
متن کاملActinomycetes with antimicrobial activity isolated from paper wasp (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) nests.
Actinomycetes-a group of antimicrobial producing bacteria-have been successfully cultured and characterized from the nest material of diverse arthropods. Some are symbionts that produce antimicrobial chemicals found to protect nest brood and resources from pathogenic microbes. Others have no known fitness relationship with their associated insects, but have been found to produce antimicrobials ...
متن کاملبررسی اثر ضدّ قارچی اکتینومیستهای خاکزی علیه Microsporum gypseum در شرایط آزمایشگاهی
Background and Aim: Human cutaneous infections are caused by a homogeneous group of kreatinophilic fungi, called Dermatophytes. Such infections are accounted as a principle public health, at present. Microsporum gypseum a cause of baldness in Iran. Cases occur sporadically due to Microsporum gypseum in puppies and soil and is transmitted to humans. Since these pathogenic dermatophytes are eukar...
متن کاملIsolation of biologically active Actinomycetes from untouched soils: a case study from Karaj district, Iran
Actinomycetes are a source of a broad variety of secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities, such as antifungi, antibiotics and antitumorals; many of which have been developed for clinical use. In this study, 34 actinomycetes from untouched soils were isolated from Alborz Province-Iran. Evaluation ofantifungal and anti bacterial activities of these isolates, demonstrated the capab...
